Today’s firms are struggling to cope with the rapidly changing economic environment fueled by: (1) the digital transformation of all enterprises with the advancement of IT technologies including big data analytics, cloud computing, Internet of Things (“IoT”), Artificial Intelligence (“AI”), Autonomous Driving, Blockchain, NFT, Metaverse, etc.; (2) the COVID-19 pandemic which has accelerated the digital transformation and exposed vulnerabilities of the global supply chains of many industries; and (3) the economic competition between the two superpowers, the US and the PRC. However, it is not well known to the people in industries that intellectual property (“IP”) is a key driving force of such rapid changes. This course is designed to facilitate students to gain legal and managerial insights into IP, especially with regard to the two most conspicuous digital transformation technologies, AI and Metaverse. Utilizing audio-visual materials and class slides, the instructor will guide students to acquire legal knowledge and managerial wisdom related to these evolving technologies. Throughout the course, the students can be equipped with comprehensive knowledge and skills to make the most of the IP, or in a more accurate term, intellectual capital that includes various kinds of intangible assets as well as IP based on those advanced technologies. Considering the legal foundation of the IP, the instructor will first guide the students to acquire legal knowledge and legal analytical skills and then apply them to real-life business situations. Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

- Explain the fundamental concepts and principles of IP that applies to AI and Metaverse;
- Acquire comprehensive analytical skills for strategic decision-making for effective management of IP created in the age of digital transformation; and
- Apply knowledge and skills acquired in this course to their real-life business cases.
